Erykah Badu’s New Video "Window Seat" Stirs Controversy

It was just a few weeks ago that Lady Gaga and Beyonce were swirling in controversy over their “Telephone” video, with many people asking whether music videos had gone too far.
Singer Erykah Badu has come on the news again with the imminent release of her latest album, “New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh.” However, even before its release, the album, seems to have become mired in controversy. It is not so much the album itself that is creating quite a lot of ripples, but a single that features in the album, “Window Seat.” Or rather, it is the video of the album that is creating all the controversy. According to some, the video, in which Erykah Badu strips down to her birthday suit, asserts a very strong political and social statement, while others feel that it is merely in bad taste.
In the video, Erykah Badu is seen stripping, and at the end of the video, she wears nothing. Soon afterward she is shot, and lies down to die in the same spot where the former President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated.
The singer, who is a native of Dallas, Tweeted: “I would never disrespect JFK. his revolutionary thinking is my inspiration. My performance art has been grossly misinterpreted by many.”
Do you think she went too far, or do you see the artistic statement Badu is making? If she were fully clothed, or nude in a different location, would it matter..

Get To Know An African Soul-Jazz Vocalist ~ SOMI ~

I discovered Somi while surfing the internet today. So I started to take a sneek peek of her album Red Soil In My Eyes, listening to the song “Ingele” over at YouTube, the more I listened to her the more I was drawn to find out more about her music.  If The Rain Come First is her latest album, and  had  previously released 2 albums before the electric soul-jazz of 2003’s Eternal Motive (SanaaHouse) and the acoustic, culture-merging elegance of 2007’s multilingual Red Soil in My Eyes (World Village/Harmonia Mundi).

This young songwriter was born in Illinois and did most of her growing up in America, but the singer who calls herself Somi — that’s short for L. Kabasomi Kakoma — is the daughter of Rwandan and Ugandan parents, also spent time living in Africa and, due in no small part to the extremes of that experience, has created a seamless merger of cultures, sounds and emotions with this richly textured recording

Somi has been featured on CNN International, The Ananda Lewis Show, and BET, while performing at venues like Joe’s Pub, B.B.King’s in Times Square, The Blue Note in New York, the Atlanta Jazz Festival, and Chicago’s South Shore Jazz Fest.I just cant believe that I have never heard of her before, until today .The minute I heard the song, I was like “WOW”, what a powerful voice! If you like jazz sound of Sade, you are going to love Somi. Check out Somi’s Red Soil In My Eyes”

The Village Voice described her as “One of the most distinctive voices of New York’s progressive soul movement” Somi album “If  The Rains Come First” debuted number 2 on the Billboard World Music charts and number 21 on the Billboard Heatseeker Albums. This album has been very well received in the industry, earning four stars by the “All Music Guide’ after calling it “Ethereal, Surreal, and Soulful.” The Billboard.com” calls the album “All Elegance and Awe… Utterly Captivating!” and “The Boston Globe” calls the album “Glistens With Sheen Of An Almost Impossibly Perfect Cosmopolitanism.”
Iam going to get this album.I am sure this is going to be one of my best music investments. To hear a sample of this album, visit www.somimusic.com

MusicMonday ~ Earth Song By Michael Jackson

This song makes me sad everytime I hear it.. We have to stop destroying our earth, save plants and animals and love one another.

“Earth Song”
What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain…
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we’ve shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
What have we done to the world
Look what we’ve done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son…
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don’t know where we are
Although I know we’ve drifted far
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can’t even breathe
(What about us)
What about apathy
(What about us)
I need you
(What about us)
What about nature’s worth
(ooo, ooo)
It’s our planet’s womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We’ve turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We’re ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can’t we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can’t you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
