Stop Waiting,Do It Now!! There’s No Better Time Than Right Now To Live Your Life and Be Happy…

So stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school,
until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds,
until you have kids, until your kids leave the house,
until you start work, until you retire,
until you get married, until you get divorced,
until Friday night, until Sunday morning,
until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off,
until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter,
until you are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth,
until your song comes on, until your song ends
until you’ve had a drink, until you’ve sobered up,
until you die, until you are born again
to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy–David In Sanya

Occupational Therapy Has Nothing To Do With Your Occupation!

As I introduce myself and my title, I often hear, “I’m retired. I don’t need an occupational therapist…Most people thinks occupational therapy is something to do with  their occupation and they often want to do physical therapy instead, when asked why physical therapy? their answer..”I want to be fit.I dont need occupational therapy, I retired years ago”!One common question I’ve been asked by patients or family members is what’s the difference between Physical Therapy(PT) and Occupational Therapy(OT)? As an Occupational therapist  I’ve decided to take the time to explain the difference between  these two disciplines.

Occupational Therapy(OT) is treatment that helps individuals with mental or physical deficiencies to achieve independence and improve one’s ability to perform daily activities by emphasizes the acquisition of or compensation for functional performance skills needed in daily living.Occupational therapist focus on small and large motor groups that contribute to self care skills such as feeding, dressing, grooming and hygiene, increase independence with toileting skills, transfers from/to bed, toilet, wheelchair. In general; to increasing one’s independence in necessary life skills

Occupational therapists can also prescribe an adaptive equipment if it’s needed, for example a bedside commode, reachers, dressing sticks, shoe horn and adaptive eating utensils. Occupational therapists may also offer programs and services from Birth toThree, driver’s rehabilitation, low vision, ergonomics/work hardening and lymphedema treatment.Sometimes an OT is required to go at a person’s home to perform a home assessment/evaluation to determine if the home is safe and is adaptable to the individual’s needs.

Occupational therapy practitioners work with different populations, diagnosis, specialities, and in different settings such as in hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation facilities, private practice, sheltered workshops, home health agencies, community mental health centers, public school systems, schools for handicapped children, adult day care programs, research facilities, for local businesses as a consultant or for universities or vo-techs as educators.

OT Areas of focus include:
- Fine motor skills: small, finely coordinated hand movements
- Visual perceptual skills: the ability to understand and interpret what is seen
- Visual motor skills: the ability to coordinate visual skills and motor skills

Physical Therapy(PT) on the other hand, involves rehabilitation from injury by emphasizes the acquisition of basic motor skills necessary for functional mobility as well as the physical capability.Physical therapists focus on the large motor groups that contribute to walking, reaching, standing and physical activities. They work on strength, balance, range of motion and swelling as well as pain to encourage independence.

PT Areas of focus include:
- Gross motor skills: activities that use large muscle i.e walking, climb stair e.t.c
- Mobility skills: moving safely throughout the environment with or without an adaptive equipment
- Postural control and alignment needed to perform daily activities and for increasing independence in life skills

Both Physical and Occupational Therapists may address the following areas:
- Strength and endurance
- Body awareness
- Proper body positioning and adaptations
- Sensory motor skills
- Safety awareness

Physical therapists and Occupational therapists have similar training. Occupational therapists receive more training in cognition, fine motor, oral and hand skill interventions and Physical therapists receive more training  in gross motor and postural development.PT’s and OT’s work in tandem for the best outcome.I hope this has answered some of the questions. I’ve tried to be as short and descriptive as I could , but I did talk a lot more about Occupational therapy than Physical therapy because it seems like most people are having a hard time understanding what is occupational therapy.

Be Culturally Informed;KANGA -A Beautiful African Garment

Today I wanted to talk about this beautiful African  garment called KANGA. Kanga means “guinea hen” in Swahili for its brilliant colors. Kanga is a colourful garment worn by women and occasionally by men throughout Eastern Africa. It is a piece of printed cotton fabric, about 1.5m by 1m, (as long as the span of your outstreched arms and wide enough to cover you from neck to knee,or from breast to toe)often with a border along all four sides (called pindo in Swahili), and a central part (mji) which differs in design from the borders. Khangas are usually very colorful ,printed in bold designs and bright colours and  most of them do have Swahili sayings printed on them .Kangas are usually bought and worn as a pair – called a “doti”.

Apart from its protective and decorative role, kanga is all about sending the message. It is the equivalent of the get well, greetings, or congratulations cards in the western culture but in this case the message goes a little bit beyond the normal meaning. For example, a fruit, a flower, a boat, or a bird could mean good upbringing or just the appreciation of beauty. On the other hand, a lion, a shark, or any such kind of dangerous animals could signal the sense of danger or a clear warning.
Kangas are the perfect gift. Husbands give kangas to wives. children to their mothers, a woman may split a pair to give half to her best friend. Men can sleep in kangas, and often wear them around the house; women wear them everywhere; babies are virtually born into them, and are usually carried in a soft sling of kanga cloth. Kangas are extremely popular throughout East Africa not only for clothing but for their multiple uses; no-one can ever have too many!

Says Welcome Pres. Bush To Tanzania

It says Congratulation Barack Obama

Kanga has also been used to mobilize people in political rallies, public health campaigns as well as creating awareness to particular development projects. When words are difficult to articulate with a mouth, inscribe them on kanga and wait for the results. Although cheap in price, the power of kanga in the Swahili culture is unimaginable.

These are some of the Swahili sayings found in Kanga
  • Wema hauozi — Kindness is never wasted
  • Kawia ufike — Better late than never
  • Riziki Ya Mtu Hupangwa Na Mungu — One’s fortunes are planned by God
  • Mimi Na Wangu Wewe Na Wako Chuki Ya Nini — I have mine and you have yours — why the fuss?
  • Sisi Sote Abiria Dereva Ni Mungu — In this world we are all passengers, God is the driver.
  • Fimbo La Mnyonge Halina Nguvu — Might is right.
  • Liya Na Tabia Yako Usilaumu Wenzako — Do not blame others for problems you have created yourself.
  • Naogopa Simba Na Meno Yake, Siogopi Mtu Kwa Maneno Yake — I fear the lion for its jaws, I do not fear man for his word….

Dogs Like To Stick Their Heads Out The Window, But Dont Like When You Blow On Their Faces.

I have always asked myself what is it with dogs, everytime they are in the car they stick their heads out the window with the wind blowing up to 40mph,but dont like when we blow on their faces? My puppy CoCo gets so excited when he finds out that he is going for a car ride. The minute he enters the car,he stick his head right out of the window.I have now come to understand, why they do it and love it so much. I now know that they love when their ears flap in the wind, they get over thousands of scent just by sticking their head out of the window, they enjoy the scents they pick up and love smelling new things.
Similarly, they may dislike being blown on because it is only one smell, that being our stinky breath, possibly mixed with something we just ate that we didn’t share. Also, they dont like the pressure of the air just concentrating on one area, when they stick our their head, the wind hits different area of their faces but they are too excited to care. According to the experts it “bothers the dog’s whiskers, which often causes an involuntary nervous reaction to avoid the stimulation—like how we scratch an itch”..
Fresh air is the way to go.Think about it…they like to feel the breeze, the same way we do when we are in a convertables. It’s always more fun with the top down.

Happy Hannukah To Our Jewish Friends !!

Wishing a Happy Hanukkah 2009 to all Jewish Brothers and Sisters. Hanukkah/Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish Holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in  Jerusalem.Hanukkah is observed for eight nights, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew Calendar, which may occur as early as late November to as late as late December in the Gregorian Calendar.
An important part of the Hanukah celebration is the menorah. This is a candleholder with eight candles and a shammash or servant candle. One candle is lit by the shammash for each of the night of Hanukah. After the lighting of the candles, people give gifts to one another. People sing and make merry. A popular food for Hanukah is potato pancakes, or latkes, cooked in oil in honor of the miracle.

To Achieve The Incredible, You Have To Attempt The Impossible.

Just Finished watching “Fly Away Home”.Today was my first time watching this movie, and I must admit ,this movie exceeded my expectations! I was so impressed by this little girl,a 14 years old kid who lead a family of orphaned geese who lost their way.
Her name-Amy, who lost her mother to a car accident in New Zealand. She then moves to Canada to live with her father, but finds her new life miserable, until she finds abandoned goose eggs from when the developers tore up the forest behind her home.
They soon hatch and Amy becomes their “mother” and takes care of them. Winter quickly arrives, and the geese must go south. But who will show them the way? It is up to Amy and her father to make sure that the young geese find their way, and with the assistance of her father’s invention, they do just that, they helped her to get the geese to migrate to a preserve. At the end of the movie, you see the geese returned back and are spotted on Amy’s porch the following Winter!
The movie is based on a remarkable true story that happened only there really wasn’t a character named Amy or Thomas or Susan or Uncle David or Barry. But their based on real people.

Tanzanite- Tanzania’s Rarest Gem.The Germstone Of The 20th Century!!

Tanzanite is an exceptionally rare gem stone- estimated at a thousand times rarer than diamond. This extraordinary gemstone occurs in only one place worldwide. Its blue, surrounded by a fine hint of purple, is a wonderful colour. It is named after the East African state of Tanzania, the only place in the world where it has been found.

Africa? Does anyone think of gemstones when they hear that name? Well they should, because Africa is a continent which provides the world with a multitude of truly magnificent gemstones, like tanzanite for example. On its discovery in 1967, it was enthusiastically celebrated by the specialists as the ‘gemstone of the 20th century’. They held their breath in excitement as they caught sight of the first deep-blue crystals which had been found in the Merelani Hills near Arusha in the north of Tanzania.

Millions of years ago, metamorphic schists, gneisses and quartzites formed impressive, flat-topped inselbergs on a vast plain in the shadow of Kilimanjaro. The precious crystals grew in deposits on the inside of these unusual elevations. For a long, long time they were hidden from the eye of Man, until one day some passing Masai shepherds noticed some sparkling crystals lying in the sun and took them along with them.

In Merelani today, the search is carried on for the coveted crystals in several, smallish mines, in some cases using modern methods. As a rule, only small grains are found, but now and again the mineworkers succeed in fetching out a larger crystal – to the joy of the mine owners and that of the large number of tanzanite fans.

The tanzanite trade is in the hands of many licensed merchants, mostly on a small scale, who have, over the decades, built up stable, trusting business relationships with gemstone companies in India, Germany, Israel and the USA. An estimated 90 per cent of all tanzanite merchants are official members of the International Colored Gemstone Association ICA, and are thus bound by the high ethical standards of that organisation. In this way, this exclusive gemstone is not subject to trade via dubious channels, but instead, in spite of its rarity, passed on along reputable trade routes to established cutting-centres and subsequently to major jewellers all round the world.

TANZANIA" The Cradle Of Mankind"–Celebrated Its 48th Independence!!

9 December 1961 – Tanzania Achieves Independence. The mainland of Tanzania became a German colony called Tanganyika in 1884 whilst the Sultanate of Zanzibar became a British Protectorate in 1890. Tanganyika became a British mandated territory in 1918 and achieved independence in 1961. In 1963 Zanzibar achieved independence, and a year later formed a union with Tanganyika under the new name of Tanzania.

Tanzania is home to some of the oldest human settlements unearthed by archaelogists , including fossils of early humans  found in and around Olduvai Gorge in northern Tanzania, an area often referred to as “The Cradle of Mankind”. These fossils include Paranthropus bones thought to be over 2 million years old, and the oldest known footprints of the immediate ancestors of humans, the Laetoli footprints, estimated to be about 3.6 million years old.

SKYPE-Some Of You May Know Skype, Some Of You May Even Use It, But Many Of You Might Not Have Any Clue What It’s All About. So Here We Go…

Who Is It For

Do you have families or friends abroad whom you call more often? Then Skype is for you.Skype calls are particularly useful for those with friends and families living abroad because of the cost saving over more traditional methods.

Nowadays, many people are choosing not to have a landline, but are turning to technology for their communication needs. With the advent of the mobile phone and computers, landlines are becoming slightly old fashioned and restrictive. For not much more than line rental charge, mobile users can use their free minutes to call one another or send text messages.

How It Works

Skype allows users to communicate( through computer and/or mobile phone) by both voice, and more traditional textual instant messaging.Calls to other users of the service and, in some countries, to free-of-charge numbers, are free, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing. Voice chat allows both calling a single user and conference calling.Skype’s text chat client allows group chats, emoticons, storing chat history, offline messaging and (in recent versions) editing of previous messages.

What You Need To Do

By downloading their software, a user of Skype can call other Skype users anywhere in the world for free.Users can communicate through PC to PC free calling, or Mobile phone to Mobile phone free calling. As long as both users have Skype downloaded to their computers and mobile phones.

Download Skype Here..and start using Skype today, believe me, is worth it.I have used Skype more than any other software I have currently on my system. I’ve also installed Skype into my mobile phone and I am able to communicate with my friends who also have skype on their mobile phone, free of charge. So what are you waiting for? It’s free after all..

When Planning For Your Next Winter Gateway or Adventure- -Why Not Try Something Different This Time? AN ICE HOTEL..

An ice hotel- a temporary hotel made up entirely of snow and sculpted blocks of ice.All of the ice hotels are reconstructed every year, and are dependent upon constant sub-freezing temperatures during construction and operation. The walls, fixtures, and fittings are made entirely of ice, and are held together using a substance known as snice which takes the place of mortar in a traditional brick-built hotel.

When is the best time to visit ICEHOTEL? It depends on what you want to experience. ICEHOTEL shifts from frozen solid to a free flowing river – and back – during a year, still promoting the best each season has to offer. ICEHOTEL never stands still
In popular culture, an ice hotel was featured in the James Bond film Die Another Day.The well known Ice hotels are found in-Sweden, Canada, Norway, Romania and Finland. Enjoy Your Stay…LOL

Africa Needs Trade, Not Aid!!

I passionately believe that TRADE NOT AID is the only viable strategy for Africa’s economic and social development.Aid, whether humanitarian or economic, confers enormous power and influence on donors to the extent that the political leadership in recipient countries are more accountable to them than to their own people. In truth, Africans are and will be escaping poverty the same way everybody else did: through the efforts of resourceful entrepreneurs, democratic reformers and ordinary citizens at home, not through PR extravaganzas of ill-informed outsiders.Just Saying..
